Vast Vision - Luminosity / Contact EP
Roland and Stijn have had a great year so far thanks to their massive singles "Oceanblue" with Jason van Wyk and "Everything" with Fisher. Their latest work comes in the form of their three-track "Luminosity / Contact EP," featuring two originals and a remix from DNS Project.
Luminosity
The A-side is an upbeat, clean trancer with some oldschool/classical feel, thanks to its gradual, epic theme. Firm percussion and crunchy bass offer a solid foundation that the track quickly constructs upon. Strong sidechaining is present on many of the synths, giving the track a nice pumping feeling. The breakdown features some clean piano riffs and the epic progression. A plucky lead soon emerges and the track sweeps up with a nostalgic snare roll. A solid anthem overall with some cool ideas. Much punchier / more bangin' than I'm used to hearing from these guys, which is not a bad thing at all!
DNS Project Remix
The DNS Project tries a different approach, both to the original and their usual efforts. Crunchy claps and bouncy drums at the start bluntly suggest this will be a proggy remix of sorts. Once the pluck stabs and sidechained bass and pad begin to filter in, we realize our suspicions were dead on. The phat rolling bassline and snare that drop in next reminds me of Myon & Shane 54's bangin' remix of Andy Moor's "So Much More" so yes, there's quite a bit of energy present in this remix. The track builds up and then with a sweep, filters into the breakdown. The break offers a cool filtered breakbeat, soft pads and some piano riffs. The dreamy and melodic vibe only lasts for so long before the driving bass begins to nudge its way in and the track picks itself back up again, returning to the status quo prior to the breakdown. After a second piano-laden breakdown emerges and dissipates, the track begins to unwind. Overall a detailed track with a bit of repetitiveness yet at the same time it offers enough variety. Quality!
Contact
Perhaps my favorite track from the EP, "Contact" is a massively epic pad-driven monster that just tugs at the heartstrings! It even offers a dramatic intro, featuring those beautiful string pads. The percussion soon kicks in and the pads take a backseat as the driving bassline fades in and the percs assemble. The pads quickly push back to the surface as more blips, plucks and piano bits dance across our headphones. In the breakdown, the pads filter down then up and down again as the theme develops. Piano riffs and a soaring distorted pad quickly come into focus. Overall the soundscape is simply beautiful and becomes even more so as a smooth pluck/saw-lead surfaces and the track suddenly sweeps into full-on chorus mode. Driving, melodic and epic without sounding generic, this is a good hybrid of oldschool uplifting trance and today's edgier trance sounds.
Conclusion
Offering good coverage across a few distinct areas, this EP is well worth checking out. All tunes are good but "Contact" really stands out the most. 4/5
