Sound Fiction feat. Kate Cameron - Alive

Sound Fiction are a Russian duo, Dmitry Filatov and Vadim Soloviev, who deliver the latest release on Mike Shiver’s Captured record label, with remixes from the man himself alongside label stars Matias Lehtola and Soliquid. For this track they have enlisted the impressive vocal talents of UK singer Kate Cameron, who has touched every trance fans heart with the stunning Chakra and Space Brothers tracks, not to mention my favourite Above & Beyond record, Far From In Love.

First up is Dmitry Filatov’s version. Russian producers have impressed me greatly of late, and this is no exception. Well used bongo loops and an electro bass contrast with brilliant soft melodic segments. The production has a great flow to it as it swells into an uplifting chorus, with the immense power of Kate’s voice. A beautiful guitar melody then drifts in, leading to the main breakdown with again, soft melodic elements and a heartbreaking plucked melody that reminds me of ‘Far From In Love’. Wonderful vocals in a brilliant production.

Matias Lehtola impressed many with his Burning Bright production last year, and his mixes are of similar high quality. Layers of atmospheric sounds wash over a simple, yet quite tough, bassline as he makes superb use of the gentle melodic elements of the original. The vocal is placed perfectly in the mix as it rises and builds, with snatches of the guitar melody. The main break is wonderful, moving, tear jerking stuff as he introduces a simple melody of his own before waves of synths coming cascading down. He doesn’t use the full chorus, but it works in his mix as the production is powerful enough without it, shown in the Dub as it stands up as a great piece of trance, even without the vocals.

The ever reliable Mike Shiver puts out another brilliant production. What I love about his tracks recently is that they are packed with energy and atmospherics, and this is no exception. A full on trance headrush centred on that stunning melody from the original, Shiver includes a more euphoric trance breakdown, reworking the tune into a bit of an epic anthem. Again, he omits the chorus but also the guitar melody, which is a shame. Still, excellent remix that stands up perfectly well as a Dub too.

Young talent Soliquid goes down a totally different route with a bizarre, tripped-out and completely random remix of thrashy glitchy techno with a euphoric breakdown. The vocal doesn’t quite fit in there but at least it is something original and I’m sure will have its fans, but I’m not one of them.

The second half of the duo, Vadim Soloviev, weighs in with the two final mixes, slow burning yet energetic prog monsters with plenty of bite. Once again, the layers of sounds are a treat for the ears and each part works in perfect harmony with the rest. It takes a full three minutes for the vocal to come in over twinkling melodies. The break brings in, once again, that stunning melody. My only complaint about this mix is that it comes back in again a bit fast, but the rest of the production is superb.

Conclusion

A wonderful release on Captured, it is great to hear Kate Cameron’s superb voice once again, it really takes me back to some classic trance records. There is a good variety in the mixes, with the Russians supplying excellent, more progressive original mixes and Shiver taking care of the euphoric side with his usual class. Soliquid’s mix is a bit messy for me, but will have its admirers. My personal favourite though is Lehtola’s version, he’s used all the best parts of the original in a wonderfully smooth and original sounding production of great style. Top release!
