Phynn - Starfire At Night
Updated: Monday 03rd, March 2008
Dutchman Phynn has long been a protégée of Tiësto, after exploding on the scene several years ago. Back then he was known for his soaring euphoric trance and juggling making music with school work while fending off fans who thought his trance should be a bit more Chinese. Fast forward to 2008 and, with the support of the Big Tijs, Phynn is fulfilling his promise. He has begun to develop his own sound, a sound that is splitting opinion. I personally thought See You Smile was great and his recent remix of Andy Duguid – Don’t Belong was especially strong. Starfire At Night is his latest offering with vocals from Alexander Perls and a remix from that man again, Andy Duguid.
The Original bounces along on an electro style bassline with snippets of the vocal and big pads giving it a warm feeling. The first breakdown unleashes the full vocal with a very effective guitar melody before Phynn drops it into a brilliant driving tech-edged section that retains the euphoric feeling. The second breakdown nudges in an unconvincing riff in that I feel unsettles the production leaving it feeling unbalanced . Help is on hand though from the Super Scotsman Andy Duguid. He gives it a real filthy and funky bassline with bleeps and bloops in all the right places and excellent stuttered effects on the vox, building up the tension in the break and creating an awesome rock hard electro groove. No real big build ups, just heads down dancefloor action and one of Duguid’s better mixes to date. One for the floor!
Conclusion
The Original is packed full of good ideas – in fact too full of them. It is a bit of a disjointed production that doesn’t know whether it is coming or going. Andy Duguid rocks it on the remix though, using the vocal excellently to create a real dirty electro dancefloor burner. Grab the remix! 4/5
Released 18th February on Black Hole.
