Mike Shiver vs. Mathias Lehtola feat. Andrea Britton - Captured
Captured is the latest release on, funnily enough, Captured Music, a Swedish label and is a collaboration between label head Mike Shiver and his fellow countryman and A&R bod Matias Lehtola. You can pretty much guarantee quality, well-crafted trance with Shiver and Lehtola’s rare production outings are always of a high standard, like Burning Bright, reviewed here. This is a full-vocal production from respected UK singer Andrea Britton who has a string of trance hits to her name such as Am I On Your Mind? and Winter. With remixes from the super-Finn Joonas Hahmo, fast rising star Jorn van Deynhoven and a progressive mix from Timo Juuti this release screams class before you even hear a beat.
The Original Mix kicks off with a bouncy, upbeat slap-bass before dropping into some lush, summery synths and piano before the beautiful, warm, rich voice of Britton comes in, preceding a more powerful, energetic instrumental section with breathy backing vox and piano creating a huge rush. The main breakdown is reached, with some dreamy pads and the sweet piano melody is played in full and, before the glorious lead melody builds, and the soaring chorus is finally reached creating a marvellous climax.
Joonas Hahmo has finely honed his style to the perfect fusion of trance and house, clearly evident here. Beautiful bright sunny melodies and soothing strings play over a vibrating, slightly electro bassline with the vocals used quite sparingly yet very well placed, sitting perfectly in the mix, added to that there are some early-nineties sounding synths and some distortion-heavy climaxes. A wonderful remix designed for sunshine listening.
Jorn van Deynhoven has made his mark this year with some strong productions and remixes, and this is one of his best yet. Turning the track into a full-on uplifting stormer, this has an abundance of energy and he has used the vocal, the piano and lead melody incredibly well to build up the anticipation to the euphoric climax. This is a very polished production with a slight air of Above & Beyond about it.
Rounding off the package is Timo Juuti’s upbeat electro-prog mix, a solid warm-up record with vocals used in a very ‘dub’ way, including chopped-up segments, the lead theme played on an interesting synth and good use of the piano and vocal in the breakdown.
Speaking of Dubs, if the vocal isn’t for you there are dub versions of both the Original and Jorn van Deynhoven’s mixes.
As expected this is an excellent release from producers of proven calibre on a very consistent label at the top of their game, topped off with one of Andrea Britton’s best vocals for a while. Each mix has its own merits and suits a different type of set and mood – one of the strongest vocal tracks of 2009 so far. 5/5
