Mandy Reid - Absolute Elsewhere/Century
Top Irish producer Mandy Reid returns to Spinnin’ with two new tracks following the success of, the mighty Tornado, one of my tracks of 2007, and her thumping remix of JOC – Rotterdam. Paul van Dyk is a big fan, nearly a year ago he featured her as is artist to showcase in his one off show standing in for Eddie Halliwell on BBC Radio 1, as is techno don Carl Cox. On this aural evidence it is obvious why.
Absolute Elsewhere begins with typically tight Mandy Reid percussion joined by lush chunky keys before a solid low bassline is introduced. Distorted leads rise up as layers of driving percussion are scooped onto the mix developing into a heads down techno rush. Similar to Tornado the track enters a haunting breakdown with great old school vocal loops, before a big main-roof riff cuts through the haze. Reid uses synths solely and superbly to create the build up before dropping the kickin’ beat back in creating an intense climax that resonates right to the last beat. Dark, strobe flecked tech trance at its very best!
Century is slightly more laid back with a funkier groove. That’s not to say it is not tough though. Scything rotor blade synths carry it smoothly to soaring heights in a floating production with a powerful heartbeat. A gorgeous dreamy breakdown lifts Century ever higher with a brilliant distorted stabbed lead forming the focus of the second half. Not quite as instant as Absolute Elsewhere but this is a track that possesses hidden depths.
Conclusion
Mandy Reid does it again delivering on both fronts with this release. Rock hard, atmospheric, charismatic and exuberant this is tech-trance with real body behind it, a blessing compared to some of the clicky minimal dirges that has begun to blight this (sub) genre. Absolute Elsewhere just about edges it with its big riff yet Century is also more than worth a look with a slightly more intelligent assault on the dancefloor. Absolute class. 4.5/5

Absolute Elsewhere (7:30)
Century (7:29)
