Jody Wisternoff - Starstrings
Jody Wisternoff has truly stepped out of the impressive shadow of his Way Out West partner-in-crime Nick Warren in the past year, with a string of gorgeous productions and remixes such as Cold Drink, Hot Girl and Nostalgia. Here he pops up on the house offshoot of Dutch super-label Be Yourself Music, Dirty Soul with the full vocal Starstrings. The eighties style remix comes from French electro-noisenik Helmut Kraft.
Vocal Version
Almost instantly, a beautiful melody drifts in, carried along by soothing pads, with the vocal entering with a trademark Wisternoff bouncy bass around the minute mark. The vocal is understated, in fact it sounds a bit Seal-esque, I love it, it is so effective. Repetition is the key its effectiveness as it grows into a moving chorus. Buoyed by flecks of acoustic guitar and strings it flows effortlessly. All the usual Wisternoff touches are here to create the perfect atmosphere, as the stellar strings swell to a sublime break. There is then a period of just guitar and a new, short melody before the excellent bass is brought back in, carried into the closing stages where the bass is forefront and the vocal doesn’t reappear.
Instrumental
Identical to the vocal version, but without the vocals. As in any Wisternoff tune, the production is more than strong enough to carry it off. I love the vocals, but if you are not a vocal fan, this one is for you. What is does do is make the strings the star of the show (ho ho) - they really are sublime.
Helmut Kraft 1983 Remix
Eighties style beat and bass all the way in this bizarre electro-clash style remix. Wobbly synth stabs and a high pitched melody, with the strings making a brief appearance, and no vox, the track goes round in circles and is ultimately cute, but forgettable.
Conclusion
As with any Jody Wisternoff track this is the perfect tune to stick on when you’re feeling down and for just over six minutes everything is fine in the world. The bassline, vocals and super strings all combine in the most perfect harmony. The sort of track you could listen to all day – gorgeous.
