Def Tactical & M6 - Pitchblack
Updated: Tuesday 24th, July 2007
Flütterspark is an intriguing new label from the fabulous Five AM team that in the short time it has been around has definitely brought to the world some fascinating dance music. Some of it has been a bit too off the wall for my tastes but there has been some flashes of genius, most notably the fantastic DNS Project – Invisible Touch (Beat Service Remix) – hunt that one down it’s magical. Now fresh from their appearance on Five AM Vibe the ingenious production talents of Def Tactical & M6 are back with Pitchblack. Ever growing in popularity, this has found support from the likes of Paul van Dyk, Flash Brothers, Gareth Emery and Ali Wilson.
M6 What The Funk Mix
Dutchman Mark Sixma delivers a funk laden mix with a playful, rising, bubbling bassline giving the track great groove. Clever and tight percussion drives the track excellently. It really is all about the bassline as it phases in and out, quirky melodies darting around it. For a while, it drops down to a minimum of elements before building back up again, swirling from the depths to a climax of distorted synths. Very effectively done, this is a great ‘filler’ track to keep your set and crowd moving.
Def’s Tactical Operations Mix
Anton Kordic pops up with a more intriguing take. A fascinating intro, a melee of interesting sounds gradually introduces the funked up bassline. It takes a while to get going, with the bassline teasing away as layers of percussion are added and before you know it your toes are tapping. From nowhere a distorted melody comes in as the bassline builds up again to a reasonable climax, with again distortion playing a big part. The elements then drop away leaving the rattling percussion. Different.
Conclusion
Another fascinating release on this most intriguing of labels. Out of the two mixes I would go for M6’s take, it is more dancefloor accessible and has that extra pinch of funk. Both are well worth a look, as is everything bearing the name Flütterspark. Quirky genius.
