Re-Ward - Parzival/Connections
Updated: Tuesday 24th, July 2007
Re-Ward is a young producer from the Netherlands who, with this EP, brings us his second release on the deceptively named German label Dark Noize. Despite his young age, his last release Trail Of Tears was played by the likes of Cor Fijnemann, John O’Callaghan and Stoneface & Terminal to name a few and he has also done a guest mix for Cor Fijnemann’s Outstanding radio show.
Parzival opens the EP and uplifting tech-trance in a Bart Claessen vibe with a high BPM is the name of the game here. Rattling percussion and a simple bassline serve as an intro before stretched synth notes and crazy stabs take over. It’s all a bit chaotic but pretty effective, with a repeating vocal sample underneath adding a bit of depth to the track. Going into the break most of the parts drop away leaving just the bassline before a mad lead stabbed lead melody comes in. It’s again pretty simple but it works, keeping the frenzied energy going before a bass drop and an arpeggiated version of the melody fades in before firing back into the original tech drive. It’s all a bit rough around the edges but an innocent, playful charm about it.
Connections begins with an nice uplifting melody before a tough kick and rolling bassline come in along with, what seems like, the same little quack sample as the heinous Leon & Bolier – Mighty Ducks, but this doesn’t last long before mad synth stabs come in, much in the same style as Parzival. The break reintroduces the melody from the start and serves as a nice uplifting break from the tech craziness but this doesn’t last long before the stabbed synth insanity takes over again. Once more, the production is a bit rough but a pretty effective track.
Pillion, produced with Vanam, begins with some good tech percussion and snare rolls and a strong bassline with some nice acidic synth lines. The first break doesn’t let up in pace, with a sweet uplifting melody, before a strong tech synths take over, building back into the driving groove. This has a great ‘stop-start’ nature to it, along with some random vocal samples and a reintroduction of the acidic synth lines, which makes it that bit more interesting. For me, this is the best track of the three.
Conclusion
This is an interesting release on Dark Noize from this young producer. Parzival and Connections are both pretty insane tracks in a similar style, with Parzival being the stronger of the two. I can see it working well on the dancefloor, drop it if you feel a bit ‘devil-may-care’ and want to surprise your crowd. Pillion I feel is the best produced of the three, with a good blend of styles and a strong uplifting melody at its core. This track only appears on the CDS and not the vinyl release however. Have a listen on his myspace page here and see what you think.
