Armada Sails Into Brooklyn
Updated: Monday 30th, July 2007
Parties: Armin Van Buuren, Benno of Rank-1, and vocalists Jennifer Rene and Susana land at McCarren Park, Brooklyn NYC. Event Review.
July 15, 2007: Brooklyn, New York City- On a warm summer’s evening, standing on a concrete ground that was once the site of a pool, enclosed by enormous red brick walls on all four sides, with a dominating stage in front that looked as if was ready for a five man band to perform, not a DJ that would be center stage, the time had finally come and Armin Van Buuren had emerged into the last hours of daylight that would soon become dusk, and took his place where he inevitably belonged; front and center.
Armin began the night softly with tracks that are making their rounds across the floors of Ibiza, Pryda-Madderferry and Booka Shade-Lucky Heather Touched The Sun In White Rooms (Markus Schulz Mashup). The night would be filled with some of the current top euphoric trance tracks including; Markus Schulz & Andy Moor-Daydream, Breakfast-The Sunlight, Cosmic Gate-Elements Of Life. New York crowds, since the days when it was house dominated, have always responded to the hard, pulsating beats. Tribal was the sound that once defined New York (see Danny Tenaglia), and even though the sounds of trance are known for their euphoria, this crowd was on the verge of exploding, but Armin did not deliver consistently what the audience was waiting for. When the tracks such as Sander Van Doorn-King of the Castle and Dubfire-Road Kill were spun, the dance floor erupted as if everyone was waiting for those hard trance moments all night, but they did not last long enough for many in attendance.
What Tiesto began with his Tiesto in Concert shows, Armin has perfected, with his Armin Only shows and various A State Of Trance live celebrations, bringing the live acts and other DJ’s on stage to enhance the EDM experience. Armin brought along with him the talented vocalists Jennifer Rene, who is the rising vocal star of the trance world, and Susana, whose vocal track on Shivers is fast becoming legendary. Also along for the ride was Benno of Rank-1, who is a top DJ/producer as well. The only thing that was missing was the MC, yes it has been referred to as corny, and otherwise unnecessary, maybe a thing of the pass that too much resembles a Scooter show, but in my humble opinion, an MC brings the whole show together by introducing the various acts and engaging the audience, acting as a narrator does in an English play.At this event Rene and Susana just suddenly appeared on stage, where as they would have been better served with a proper introduction, so the energy could have been built like a crescendo.
Thirty minutes into the show, Ms. Rene appeared on stage, even though she is rather youthful, her demeanor on stage is like a seasoned professional. She began with a fantastic rendition of Jose Amnesia’s-Wouldn’t Change A Thing, and then continued with one of this summer’s vocal trance anthems, X-Invincible (Sied Van Riel), not only was her voice beautiful, but her smile was like a virus that infected the whole crowd, it was as if the night was moving slow because the crowd was still filing in, and Armin started of with those chill beats, but when Rene took the stage it was when the crowd really responded, and it was due to the energy and excitement she brought along with her.
As the glow of the day was disappearing into the darkness of night, Susana took the stage. She sang both tracks that she did in collaboration with Armin Van Buuren-Shivers and If You Should Go. Her live vocals on Shivers, was as if you were standing in the studio with an engineer, but maybe even better. The success of Shivers was apparent in this live performance because of the piercing vocals that drove through the crowd, fueled by her heart felt emotion. It was a special moment of the night and one that brought the whole crowd together, singing along with every verse.
The defining moment of the whole night was when Benno took to the stage, the crowd erupted, and the team of Armin and Benno did not disappoint. Before the show, Benno told me that he was a little nervous in doing this live set on stage with Armin for the first time in front of so many people, rather than with the other half of Rank-1,Piet. It ended up being the highlight on this wonderful night, and went off perfect, they played together Rank1 & Alex M.O.R.P.H-Life Less Ordinary, Armin van Buuren vs Rank1-This World Is Watching Me, Cygnus X-Superstring (Rank1 remix),Armin van Buuren Communication (Armin Live on the keys),Rank1-Airwave(Benno Live on the Keytar) The people on the dance floor were into every minute of this mash up that was unfolding right in front of their eyes. Many in the crowd who do not travel to the festivals, had never seen anything like this, and the excitement overcame the whole crowd. This was later on in the night, so the venue had really filled up and everyone on hand was now having the time of their life.
If the objective of dance music has always been to bring people together and music to the masses, then this night was a complete success. New York City is known world wide as the capital of the Earth, because of its famous diversity, and this was on full view tonight. People of both genders, all races and backgrounds, were sharing this special evening together. Unlike Europe and Canada, where those over the age of 18 are welcome into the clubs, here in the States, especially in NYC, we are limited to 21 and over, which hurts the EDM scene, because at 18 many are forming there life lasting musical tastes. But at this all ages events I saw those as young as 10 up to those in their 40’s enjoying the same music. The trance scene in NYC, although underground for the most part in terms of popularity, has been embraced by a group of people that transcend any one identifying feature, and from that we can draw strength.
If there was any criticism of what was a fine evening, it was the lack of time granted for this once in a lifetime experience. What began at 6:30, ended sharply at 10:00, with Armin’s mix of Iio-Rapture, the lack of an encore left the crowd wanting and deserving more, Armin once again displayed why “DJ’s are not rock stars” to quote the ever famous WMC shirt, right after he was done he walked right into the crowd, signing autographs, taking pictures, and talking to all. Earlier in the evening Rene and Susana had also came from backstage to dance, talk to the fans, and take many photos. The defining element of our scene is that the talents have a constant interaction with the fans; they don’t see themselves as a separate entity, but rather as fans themselves. It was rather fun to see Susana and Rene dancing in front with the whole crowd to the sounds of Armin, they had their arms up in the air, and were moving with the bass lines. They love the music as much as we do and are not afraid to show it. Armin spent the whole night behind the decks waving to crowd, laughing and smiling. His good time was spread throughout. As excited as the crowd was to have Benno there, Armin even looked more so, embracing as brothers that had not seen each other in ages. He was able to coordinate the live vocal performances so they were better than studio quality, and this while continuing to work the crowd. This night was simply amazing, and much deserved for a NYC scene that supports Armin without limitations.
I hope this next statement does not come off as being bias, because of our long standing relationship with them, but Made Events, the promoter deserves many accolades and gratitude. The trance scene in NYC is hanging on by a thread at times, with the loss of many venues over the last couple of years, and the lack of any commercial radio air play, but Made does everything right when it comes to bringing in the top talent. Other promoters simply sign the “superstar DJ” stick him behind the decks, print a few flyers, and than expect everything to fall into place. Made events brings a professionalism to a genre that lacks it very much at times, they take the intuitive to locate new venues, bring in awesome laser light shows, world class sound systems, and fantastic video screens with them to many of their events. They have single-handedly changed the way promoting is done during WMC, because they constantly deliver to the EDM fans what they want, they take part on this site, their own site,
www.madeevent.com/
and local message boards, they are readily accessible and continue to bring the top trance acts to a city that is considered the house music heaven. We would like to share a collective Thank You to them for not only bringing in the talent, but doing it in style.
