SanProject

DJ San is one of Holland's most respected DJs. After being a resident at top Amsterdam night Kremlin for half a year, DJ San discovers that a weekly residency is too much of a commitment. He decides to spread his wings elsewhere and accepts residencies only on a monthly basis, except for the popular Q club where he plays every fortnight. The main goal is to get this man to play more outside of Holland so people will experience his genre-defying blend of energetic yet deep and dark tribal progressive, fused with swirling percussive techno. Even the likes of John Digweed, Lemon8, James Holden, Robin "Jaydee" Albers are captured by his skills and Digweed even aired a one hour mix on his infamous Kiss100 FM radioshow. Besides his residency at the Q club, San has accepted a monthly spot at PURE„¥ in Antwerp (Belgium) and is a returning feature on the Sessions events (NL). San plays numerous guest spots in Holland (amongst others the biggest festivals: Dancevalley, Extrema, Impulz, Mysteryland, etc.) and various gigs outside of Holland. Recent guest spots have included a US tour with the Spundae DJs, a tour in Indonesia as well as clubs in Scotland, Turkey, England and Germany. Production-wise San is better known as the guy behind Solid Sessions-Janeiro, which has just been remixed by James Holden and is being hammered world-wide by DJs such as Sasha who featured the track on his recent Essential Mix. This year San set up SanProject along with Roland K (2 men strong, Apron, Remark (Choo Choo). Their first release Xel-ha/Deep became a hit-single right away and got heavy rotation by the worlds biggest dj¡¦s. The latest SanProject (-Whatever) has once again proven to be a top tune by creating a hype amongst Keyplayers worldwide. SanProject, a new lust! With mixing the forthcoming Bellboy album, his productions and remixes being supported by almost every Superstar Dj around the globe and his own mixed CD in The Netherlands, DJ San is set to be a big name on the Global Dance-scene this year.

FOR PEOPLE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE DJ SAN SOUND, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF BOTH DJ AND PRODUCTION WISE?
As times change so does my moods when either Djing or working in the studio. A couple of years ago I was probably quite progressive in my style but now I would say that I¡¦m more Tech House orientated. Stuff with lots of percussion and aggressive basslines tend to appeal to me. In the studio anything goes. At the moment we have just finished a track that sounds like it could have been a Fleetwood Mac song. It¡¦s nice, it¡¦s an album track. We felt like doing something a bit more musical, that was the mood at the time. Next track is going to be much more of a DJ affair.

JAMES HOLDEN IS A HUGE SUPPORTER OF YOUR RECENT PRODUCTIONS. HE EVEN DESCRIBES YOUR STYLE AS ¡§THE SANPROJECT STUFF HARKS BACK TO THE HAPPY DAYS WHEN PROGRESSIVE WASN¡¦T JUST A CLEVER WAY OF SAYING BORING¡¨ ? DO YOU THINK THAT DESCRIPTION BRINGS FULLY JUSTICE TO YOUR STYLE?
It certainly did up until around 6 months ago but as I said above as times change so do I. It¡¦s a natural progression thing that cant be avoided and should be embraced. The SanProject stuff that James is talking about I¡¦ve done with Roland K.(Choo Choo, Gesture Music). Though the tracks easily fit in to a progressive set, the tracks have also been hammered by DJ´s across the board. We got support from the likes of John Digweed, Chris Cowie and even Tiesto. That´s 3 DJ´s with differing styles but were all able to play The San Project stuff. I¡¦m very happy about that.

DUE TO THE COMMERCIAL SUCCESS OF SOLID SESSIONS ¡§JANEIRO¡¨, YOU CHOSE TO LEAVE THE PROJECT TO PERSUE YOUR SOLO CAREER. HAVE YOU EVER REGRETTED YOUR DECISION?
Leaving Solid Session was difficult at the time, but I never regretted my decision. I felt it was time to do so. Due to the success of ¡¥Janeiro¡¦, the track was remixed at least a dozen times and made an appearance in various commercial charts throughout Europe. It wasn¡¦t the original that stormed the charts, but a remake of the original with a vocal, which I didn¡¦t feel completely in line with. This is usually the case when I see underground club-hits being transformed into a commercial radio edit; the essence of the track gets lost somewhere along the line. As a result the name Solid Sessions got misunderstood by many and I didn¡¦t want to be part of that¡K In a nutshell I felt very uncomfortable with the cheese.

RUMOUR HAS IT THAT CHRIS COWIE (HOOK/BELLBOY RECORDS) AND YOU HAVE SET UP YOUR OWN LABEL. IS THAT OFFICIAL?
News travels fast! Yes that¡¦s true, it¡¦s called F2 records and the first release (Dj San ¡V XLR8R) will see the light at the end of October. I have always had an enormous amount of respect towards Chris Cowie -the energy this man puts in his productions is remarkable-. We got in contact a few years ago and a friendship evolved. We dj¡¦ed together on numerous occasions throughout the world and also done a few productions together, but I never thought we would end up doing a label together. Chris has got a lot of experience through Hook and Bellboy recordings, which he had run for 13 years. For him the time has come to start something fresh and to concentrate more on his own career rather than concentrating on the careers of others that were signed to his labels. It all sounds very simple, but to start of a label together you need more than just respect. You need to have a strong connection with the person involved so that you can truly express yourself. There¡¦s nothing more personal than music!

YOU HAVE SCORED BIG HITS OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS; XEL-HA AND WHATEVER TO NAME BUT A FEW. OF ALL YOUR PRODUCTIONS, WHICH ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF AND WHY?
Actually that¡¦s an unreleased production (which will see the light the end of October on my own label, F2 records) that I¡¦ve done; Dj San ¡V XLR8R. After being an exclusive artist at the Combined Forces Label for years, my contract has just finished. Of course I¡¦ve done numerous remixes on other labels, but now the time has come to spread my wings by doing productions for various labels around the world and of course for my own label, F2!

WHAT IS MORE SATISFYING; GREAT REACTIONS FROM YOUR PRODUCTIONS OR WATCHING THE CROWDS GO MENTAL TO ONE OF YOUR SETS?
Both! The suspense you get from playing one of your own tracks to the public for the very first time is indescribable, but so is doing a three turntable mix that brings the public and yourself into a trance.

When you do a dj-set the people expect to hear tracks of your own. Sometimes you don¡¦t feel like playing your own tracks, because you know them from every little hi-hat to every effect, but that¡¦s a luxury problem..

BOTH LEMON8 AND JOHN DIGWEED HAILS YOU AS ONE OF THE GREATEST DJS IN THE SCENE. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO EARN SUPPORT FROM THEM? JOHN EVEN INVITED YOU TO PLAY ON HIS FAMOUS KISS100 SHOW A WHILE BACK.
When John Digweed phoned me up and asked me if I wanted to do a LIVE mix on his radioshow I didn¡¦t really know the impact it would have on my career. Even before the time John quoted me ¡§an amazing dj¡¨, him and Sasha, Nick Warren, Seb Fontaine, etc. were a true supporter of my tracks. It certainly did well for my self-esteem and gives me a boost to keep on doing what I¡¦m doing when I¡¦m name checked by someone like Digweed. Everyone needs a shout from time to time.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR THE FUTURE? ARE THERE ANY NEW PRODUCTIONS OR REMIXES IN THE PIPELINE?
Yeah! Chris and I have just finished a remix of Jaydee - Plastic dreams. It¡¦s always a challenge to remix such a classic. And our first shared production on the F2 label will be released after XLR8R. The track has been getting a lot of support already from some of the key players out there. Chris and I are also working on an album as we speak, which will showcase our love for various styles of music. Expect some down tempo and break beat stuff besides our dance floor orientated productions.

HOLLAND HAS ALWAYS BEEN A PIONEER MUSIC WISE. ARE THERE ANY NEW UP-AND-COMING TALENTS YOU¡¦D LIKE TO INFORM US ABOUT? WHO ARE THE STARS OF TOMORROW?
The other half of SanProject; Roland K is definitely someone to keep an eye on. A couple of years ago it was Roland that recorded a couple of records on Black Hole Recordings in cooperation with Tiesto. Despite the fact that the records did well Roland didn¡¦t want to commit to one style (trance) and decided to work with other people as well, SanProject was born!

Sebastian is also a future star. Although he hasn¡¦t released a record yet, I was blown away by the progress the guy makes. Therefore I decided to take the guy on board and to give him the opportunity to release records.

RECORDS ARE ROCKING THE CROWDS AT THE MOMENT?
01. Marc O'Tool - Unknown (Unreleased CDR)
02. Jaydee - Plastic Dreams (Chris Cowie & DJ San Remix) (CDR Unreleased EMI)
03. Nicolas Bennison - Archetype (CDR Unreleased Propulsion)
04. Chris Cowie & DJ San - Sunday (CDR Unreleased)
05. Prawler - Modjo (Electribe)

MOST PEOPLE ARE PROBABLY DEAD TIRED OF THE NEVER ENDING MP3-ISSUE, YET IT¡¦S STILL AN IMPORTANT ISSUE IN THE SCENE TODAY. WHAT ARE YOUR VIEWS UPON THE WHOLE SITUATION?
The MP3 scene is quite worrying, especially when nowadays you see a lot of dj¡¦s playing from CD as well. (You can covert MP3 into a wave file (compatible with audio players) in seconds). Obviously this does affect vinyl sales. It¡¦s not that I don¡¦t play CD¡¦s, but I only play the tracks that are unavailable on vinyl yet. Before this I had to cut acetates (test pressing on vinyl) all the time, which was extremely expensive. I sincerely hope that the true music lovers out there will realise that going to the local shop to get some records, is crucial for the many record labels and hardworking artists out there.

WHERE CAN WE EXPECT TO HEAR A DJ SAN SET THIS YEAR? WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT RESIDENCIES?
So far I¡¦ve got bookings lined out for Malaysia, South America, Malta, Greece, Romania, Scotland, Birmingham and not to forget The Netherlands. My residencies at the moment are; THE Q CLUB (North of Holland) and the MAZZO (Amsterdam) where we do a bi-monthly F2 records Label night.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS/SUGGESTIONS FOR ALL THE BEDROOM DJS AND WANNABE PRODUCERS OUT THERE ON HOW TO GET THEIR CAREER STARTED?
It¡¦s definitely a tough game to get in to. But with pure dedication and a love for music the doors may start opening. Networking is important as well. Besides the usual ´promo-cd-giveaways´, I would also recommend getting a hold of some music software. It seems these days that DJ´s have to produce their own tracks. Making tracks is a lot of fun as well. But keep trying and when that doesn¡¦t work try again. A fear of rejection is something no new DJ should be worried. Hang in there lads and trust on your abilities. Even though the music scene is tight, you might get a shot at stardom.
