Who can't remember when Children was played around the radio in 1996 and later? What did this track do on the dancefloor? '...I lifted my glance and saw a sea of hands reaching up high and a smile stamped on every face. A girl approached me in tears: 'What music is this?' she asked me. I don't think I shall ever forget that moment, when I realized my feelings had been conveyed through the music. My dream turned into reality...' (Taken from Robert Miles autobiography).

What do you have to say to your 'old' fans that saw Organik as a letdown?
RM - I do not think that my fans see Organik as a letdown. I do communicate via email on a daily basis with my fans and most of them are supporting me with what I'm doing. To those that keep on listening to trance only I say "spread your horizons, there is much more than that out there. Trance is a style that is still present in my production but in a more elaborate way. Trance is not about 4/4 on the floor and banging music, trance is about putting people's mind in a deep emotional state that allows them to experience a journey within their inner self." If you stick to the same formula you get burnt and I don't agree with all those producers that keep on making the same sort of music that we used to play 15 years ago. We are in 2002!



Which album are you most satisfied with? And why?
RM - Organik. Because I have managed to give more of a human touch to my music keeping dance elements in it. Also, it features some of the artists that I respect for what they do such as Bill Laswell, Trilok Gurtu, Nitin Sawhney and many others.



You say that your inspiration for Children was the pictures your father took from ex-Yugoslavia. What was your inspiration for tracks like One in one or Red zone?

RM - I don't really feel One and One to be a track that comes from me. It is the result of various pushes from my ex label and management. They wanted me to do more commercial music. At that time I didn't speak any English and trusted their judgments. Later on I realized that that wasn't the path I wanted to take and split from both of them. On the other hand Red Zone was a track that I composed when playing in many after hours in Italy back in the early 90's. It reflects the kind of music I was playing at that time and you can start feeling some of the first Dream elements in it.



Is it still in your interests to produce tracks like Children?
RM - No, it isn't. My music has grown up with me and my main goal now is to get into the world of soundtracks for films. Tracks included on the Organik album have been chosen to be part of the soundtrack of Bourne Identity and City of Ghosts and a few other indie movies in the US. Why not?
RM - Because I've already done that and I don't want to repeat myself. Children has been copied by so many people that have taken advantage of the situation to make money not understanding in any way the story behind that style.



What did it feel like working with so many new people on your latest album? For example: Nitin Sawhney and Bill Laswell! It must have been very different to record everything instead of programming it on synths and samplers?

RM - I have learned a lot from them. It has been a great experience.



Why did you produce most of the Organik album in your studio in Ibiza? What's so special with that place for you?
RM - I just wanted to stay in a very isolated place and the closest and most practical one was Ibiza. I haven't spent more than 3 nights in the Ibiza clubs. I rented a small 'finca' (typical Spanish farm house) in the north of the island and worked hard on the new album. However I think that Ibiza is a magic place but I don't like the club scene down there anymore - too commercial and business based. They even banned all outdoor/mountain parties so that all the money would go in clubs owners pocket.



Are you going to play tracks from Organik live in Europe sometime? Would be nice seeing Robert Miles together with Nitin Sawhney on stage playing Pour te parler.

RM - I'm planning to start touring but not with Organik. Too many musicians involved on that project. Instead I'm producing a collaboration album with Trilok Gurtu (to be released on my label S:alt next year) and we are thinking to bring the album out live. Check out my web site for more info.



Your live appearences are very rare. Why is that?
RM - I'm not mad about live appearances. I'm a studio producer and prefer to play as a DJ in front of a crowd. It gives me more freedom to experiment with people's minds.



In what direction to you want to head with your new releases? What style of music?
RM - Who knows? Every record is a catch 22. I never think about what I will do. I just do it as it comes along.



Do you have total freedom now in producing as you have created your own label and management? Or are there still people/labels/managements you have to cooperate with? And why?

RM - Yes, I'm totally in control of my music now but still, you have to go through the system to promote it and at the very end it doesn't depend on you if the record will be successful or not. The media decides for you.



You have seen the whole dance scene develop in Italy especially. What is your most memorable clubbing experience from those old days?
RM - The first time I played Children in an after hour, the crowd went mad! Also I have a very good memory of a club called Gilda in Venice. We used to play very experimental music. Good times.



Do you go out clubbing often today?
RM - Never. I have been clubbing for 15 years and don't like the way clubs are nowadays. Same formula, same music, purely business based.



Your tracks featured on Dreamland are to classify in a sub category of trance music. What do you think about the trance scene as it is today, very commercial and with superstar DJs like Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Paul van Dyk and so on?

RM - I've already answered to this - too many superstars around. Djs used to be very grounded people - now most of them are simply looking for fame and not even able to put together a drum pattern when producing their records. Their fortune is based on smart engineers that do the job for them. No reference to any DJ in particular.



Is there any big producer or DJ you would like to co-produce something with to make another break through hit?
RM -I'm more interested in working with real musicians.



Do you still carry a DAT recorder with you to record sounds as you are on the move?
RM - Every time I travel.



What sort of music do you listen to today?
RM - Many different styles. Eclectic music is my favorite.



Who is your favorite artist now and why?
RM - I've got many' It is always difficult to answer this question.



What do you think of mp3's? Do you download music through the Internet?
RM - MP3s are a good promo tool. I have nothing against it. At the end of the day they will never sound as good as the official release but it will give the user an idea of what the music is about. If he really likes it he will then buy it. It is always nice to have the original with cover and credits on it, isn't it?



And of peer-to-peer software that enables people to download, for instance, your music freely?
RM -There is nothing we can do Internet has opened a new era and piracy will always be there, now more than ever I think that people must realize that if they want to support their favorite artists they have to buy their records otherwise there will be no more new music. Labels won't have profits or money to invest on new talents.



What do you do in your spare time? That is after producing, mixing and other music business related stuff?
RM - Music. Not much of a private life right now I'm afraid. When possible I like skiing and reading.



Most of the users on Trance.nu don't have enough money to invest in hardware equipment to produce music. They use software programs to produce instead. Do you think it's vital to have hardware or even live instruments to make good quality tracks?

RM - It is not about equipment but about what you can achieve from what you can afford. When I put together Dreamland I had an Atari, a very basic desk, a keyboard and a small sampler. Many other artists have put together albums with an 8 tracks recorder. And it sounded very good!



What tip would you give to a beginner trying to differenciate himself from the rest?
RM - Try to personalize your sounds. Do not use any default audio preset. Create your own sound library recording any noise around you.



Favorite pasta dish? Or maybe you don't like pasta!?
RM - How can an Italian dislike pasta! Any pasta dish is delicious.



You have been to so many countries, in what country would you like to settle down for good? Or maybe you like traveling around?
RM - I'm planning to move to LA next year but for business reasons. I think that Australia or India could be countries where I would live my life once I have achieved a few goals that I'm still pursuing.
