Mirco De Govia Interview

This time trance.nu got hold of producer Mirco De Govia from Germany. He is one of the talented producers from the recordlabel Euphonic that took the trancescene by storm, especially last year. But don't think he is a new guy in the scene, he has been around for ages. With solo productions like Things That Matter and Epic Monolith he was gaining recognition. With his recently released album Chronoscale he finally crowned his long and hard work and with positive critics and a growing admiration from fans all over the world, it was definatly time for an interview with this German computer-expert and melodymaster.

Trance.nu: Hi Mirco, thank you for taking the time to do this interview. First of all, could you introduce yourself to our readers?
Mirco: My musical career began 1990. I was 16 years old when I bought my first Amiga computer. At this time Amiga computers were extremely top in graphics and sound. Then I got the first scene demos of the most diverse groups, which always stood in the contest around performance as well as creativity. I became enthusiastic for the music of the shows and wanted to know, how it was made. Then the tracker programs came into play. I intensively began to collect samples. So my first creations of music were born.

Trance.nu: Your biography says that you have studied computer science and programming. Do you think that it helped you in a way to enhance your producing skills?
Mirco: Well, I thing working with computer and software systems is just a technical thing. You can enhance your skills by more learning and your experience will grow that way. Composing resides more in intuitive and creative moments. The production steps with software are quite easy for me, because of knowing, how the software is designed and how the programs are working.

Trance.nu: You actually released your first vinyl already in 1994. Can you tell us what happened in your musical progression in those years? We see a big gap between 1994 and 1998?
Mirco: That was the time of my study. I was busy and I wanted to get best results. I produced in that time too, and some ideas were born there, which I realised in my recent tracks. When Euphonic was founded in 1997, Ralph Kyau asked me, if I would like to produce some tracks for the new label. I said “yes”.

Trance.nu: You met Ralph Kyau and there was the base for a long and still running co-operation. Can you tell us what you have learned from each other?
Mirco: In the time we met, it was end of 1993, we had a vision to release trance, at this time a brand new genre. So we decided to stay in contact to share our production experiences. Our friendship lead to my first record on Ralph’s first label. With the foundation of Euphonic, Ralph and his partner Steven Moebius Albert gave me and other musicians the possibility to release professional records. And this way I came in contact with Ronski Speed and Sonorous at a tea time in the homebase of Euphonic.

Trance.nu: The trance scene in Germany was and still is known for its harder sound. You seem to break these standard with a more deeper and relaxter sound. How are the reactions in your home country?
Mirco: There were a lot of positive reactions. Germany’s Keyboards magazine have chosen “Chronoscale” for album of the month and asked me for an interview. Most people were surprised by the contact with that smoother kind of sound. It’s always a pleasure for me to hear and read their opinions. But you are right, it’s not really the music for a German comercial discotheque.

Trance.nu: Are you a DJ as well?
Mirco: I never had time to learn spinning records. I have a full time job as a software developer. I know the tracks from the view of a producer and I can combine them. So sometimes I’m mixing tracks with harddisk software, especially for radio shows or so. It’s more an offline process, but makes fun.

Trance.nu: The trance scene is exploding heavily at the moment, with a lot of big labels releasing loads of stuff. What’s your opinion, how can u stand out and survive in the market?
Mirco: I think continuous working on an own artist profile and building references makes a solid base for a good future. At the moment I’m glad about the success, but I never had the idea to become professional. Being a professional producer means often to do a lot of compromises. I don’t like that.

Trance.nu: What has been the most essential tool for producing music? Which piece of hardware/software gave u the biggest step into progressing to quality music?
Mirco: I started producing with very simple equipment. I had a Casio keyboard and a DJ mixer. I dreamed of great synthesizers, but that’s not the right way. You can only grow step by step. Each synthesizer or software I bought was a milestone, because you have to learn to work with it and then you can be creative without any compromises. Today we see an overkill of devices and programs, so no one can say “that’s the tool”. I don’t want a controversy like: what is better - PC or MAC?
I programmed nearly every track of “Chronoscale” with a 10-year old tracker sequencer on my old Amiga computer. Then I recorded the lines on harddisc of a PC. So the Amiga was my first production tool.

Trance.nu: Alot of users are producing software only at the moment? What’s your view on that, do you think that all producing will be taken over by software in the future?
Mirco: Basically there always works software in electronical instruments, except real analogue synthesizers. The desktop producing technique is more comfortable and powerful. You can have a complete studio in one computer. The only missing thing is the work with your hands and fingers on all that buttons and sliders. It gives you a more contact to your machines. Now the electronic companies try to combine hardware with virtual software engines to keep the tradition of real instruments and physical devices.

Trance.nu: What are the productions/remixes you are most proud of?
Mirco: Truly I love all my productions. From the view of a clubber I prefer “Final Emotion” and the remix for “Velvet Morning”, while as a chiller I choose “Voller Sterne”.

Trance.nu: And you made it to an album actually! Reactions have been great this far. What was the thought behind the album?
Mirco: As I began to work on “Chronoscale”, some pieces like “Epic Monolith” or “Things That Matter” were finished. I did not want to release an album, which sounds the same from the beginning to the end. Therefore my intention lay more in the multilevels of electronic music. The task did not present itself so simply at the beginning, but then I got many ideas and I knew from that time exactly, how the album at the end should sound. Naturally emphasized were the club tracks, which also received the final touch by Ronski Speed, Rough Mullar and Kyau vs. Albert. In addition, the calm side of the album should present more contrast.

Trance.nu: Isn’t it a big guess to release an album, because of the difficult situation the music industry at the moment? CD-sales are still dropping, due to various reasons.
Mirco: While producing the album I also focused the market situation. I knew the problems of the music industry. So I talked with Euphonic about the chances to realize a good selling strategie. Thanks to the real believe and great work of Euphonic which engaged good partners for distribution.

Trance.nu: Any plans for the future? New singles, remixes, compilations?
Mirco: Of course I will produce new tracks and remixes. I finished converting my studio. Now I will start with fresh ideas into the new year. At the moment I am working on a brand new remix of “Voller Sterne”, while Ronski Speed is remixing it too. The record will be released in spring 2004. Also I am preparing a live act for the monthly Euphonic night in Berlin. There I will perform some “Chronoscale” tracks in new versions. The gig will be in late March.

Trance.nu: Some fans would love to see a collaboration between you and Ronski Speed. Any possibilities on that one?
Mirco: Ronski already co-produced some of my tracks. It’s a question of time. Maybe we find a way to make a real collaboration in 2004.

Trance.nu: What do you think of the internet as a promotion medium for the music? It gives loads of possibilities, it’s faster and feedback is directly returned?
Mirco: The internet is by far the best digital medium, but often without control. I hope the music industry worldwide will establish an internet platform for us musicians, in the way like Apple’s iTunes. But to be honest I prefer a vinyl , CD or DVD with artwork more then computer files.

Trance.nu: Will Mirco de Govia keep producing trance or can we expect some more experimental stuff, like for example the more downtempo tracks darker tracks?
Mirco: As a producer of electronic music I like to create a wide range of styles. It's correct that I invest much time in the sound and the complexity of the production. Thus I spend long time to reach the depth and the emotions I wish to reflect. In fact I find the trance development still interesting, but I wouldn’t speculate in which concrete direction my music will flow.

Trance.nu: What will be the sound of the future? What’s your vision about trance in this coming year 2004?
Mirco: Maybe different styles will be influenced by each other. But that’s pure speculation.

Trance.nu: Any last words for the fans on trance.nu out there?
