Filterheadz

September 2000, returning from Ibiza, brothers Bert en Maarten Wilmaers feel it is time for a change. Having produced "disco-house" under various project names until then, they decide to take on a more tribal and progressive direction. Influenced by long time heroes Deep Dish and Paul van Dyk they embark on their first project "new direction": the remix of Minimalistix "Struggle for pleasure". In short time the remix is picked up by leading dj's as Sasha, John Digweed, Jimmy Van M and Dave Seaman, just to name a few. The Filterheadz sound is born. Soon remix requests from UK labels as Hooj Choons, Nebula, Deviant and Platipus start coming in.

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF. WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START PRODUCING
MUSIC ? WHO ARE YOUR CREATIVE INSPIRATIONS ?

We both started as pop musicians somewhere mid 80’s, after that we got into
heavy metal,

After that we got into FM rock, then R&B, after that into Jazz/Fusion and after
that into House happy

HOW WAS THE FILTERHEADZ SOUND BORN, AND HOW HAS IT EVOLVED SINCE YOU FIRST
STARTED PRODUCING ? I READ ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT YOUR PREVIOUS DISCO-HOUSE STYLE
HAS CHANGED TO MORE PROGRESSIVE AND TRIBAL HOUSE ? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
UNIQUE SOUND ?

We like to think that the Filterheadz sound is constantly evolving. We don’t
want to limit ourselves to any genres. If you compare the remix for “Struggle
for pleasure” to our current release with Tomaz “Sunshine” that’s a world of
difference.

YOUR TRACKS AND REMIXES HAVE BEEN SIGNED TO MAJOR LABELS SUCH AS HOOJ CHOONS,
NEBULA, DEVIANT, PLATIPUS, DATA, NETTWERK, SPOT ON, VANDIT, FIVE AM ETC ETC. HOW
DOES IT FEEL WHEN YOU HEAR LEGENDS SUCH AS SASHA, DIGWEED, DAVE SEAMAN, DEEP DISH
AND SATOSHI TOMMIE DROP YOUR TUNES ? WHAT/WHERE WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU HEARD ONE
OF YOUR OWN RECORDS IN A CLUB ?

Probably Seb Fontaine playing “More House” at Amnesia, Ibiza. The first
time is always a bit awkward to hear your own track. You start thinking, maybe I
should have put that kick a little louder, or aren’t those vocals too loud? But
when you get great reaction from the crowd and the hands go in the air, it’s the
best feeling 

WHICH OTHER PRODUCER(S) WOULD YOU LOVE TO CO-OPERATE WITH AND WHY ?

We’re not really interested in working with other “dance producers”. We’d
much rather work with “not-dance” people. Examples : Peter Gabriel, Wes Borland,
guitar player with Limp Bizkit, or Craig Armstrong. Now getting those 3 in the
studio and adding some Filterheadz beats that would be interesting. That doesn’t
say that we would mind spending a couple days in the studio with Deep Dish, Dave
Clarke, Joey Negro or Fat Boy Slim, just to watch and steal with our eyes 

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FOR THE FUTURE ? ANY FORTHCOMING PRODUCTIONS OR REMIXES
WE SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR ? PERHAPS AN SOLO ALBUM ?

We’ve finally started working on new material. It’s gonna be a lot more
vocal oriented then before. We’ll see where things lead us. Remixes coming out
soon : Bedrock “Emerald”, Whatever Girl “Activator” (Yoshitoshi). Forthcoming
tracks : “Sunshine” (Intec), “The one who got caught”(Pitch Black), “the Rhythm/Protection”(Pitch
black), “Poised World” (Bliss)

WHAT IS MORE FUN, DJ'ING OR PRODUCING ?

Getting out there is always fun because you get to meet new people, but
studio is also fun especially when you get those creative juices flowing. Hard
to decide between the two.

YOUR REMIXES OF OLIVER LIEB'S SUBSONIK AND RALPHIE B'S MASSIVE ARE NOTHING
BUT AMAZING! HOW DO YOU GET STARTED WHEN REMIXING ? DO YOU PREFER DOING REMIXES,
OR PRODUCING YOUR OWN TRACKS ?

The rhythm comes first. When the groove is right you’re already halfway.
After all it’s dance music, if you can get people to dance to your beats you can
get away with pretty much anything. That’s the fun part about dance music. As
far as producing vs remixing, that depends. Sometimes you get really inspiring
remix material, which makes things a lot more fun. I guess producing is harder
because your starting fro scratch.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARETIME, PARTYING IN IBIZA ? OR IS IT ALL WORK WORK
WORK, AND NO FUN ? happy

It’s not all work, we also have lot’s of fun happy Partying in Ibiza is one
thing…but we also hanging out with our local friends in Belgium happy. Beside that
we both love to go cycling.

CLASSICAL QUESTION. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE EVER GROWING NUMBER OF PEOPLE
DOWNLOADING MP3 FILES ON THE INTERNET ? IS THIS A GOOD WAY FOR SMALLER ARTISTS
TO GET THEIR MESSAGE OUT, OR DOES IT COMPLETELY DESTROY THE MUSIC BUSINESS ? WHAT
IS YOUR SUGGESTION TO MAKE THIS "FIGHT" END ?

Don’t have an easy answer, sorry…I’ll keep you posted on the solution.

WHAT ARE YOUR MOST PRECIOUS 12"S ?

I’m not so much of a vinyl collector to be honest. Just gimme good music,
the format doesn’t really matter. If you’re asking about the vinyls that made a
difference, that really had an influence : Deep Dish “Future of the future”,
Trancesetters “Roaches” (Peace Division remix), Katcha “Touched by God” (Peace
Division remix), Satoshi Tomiie “Love in traffic”, Trevor Rockcliffe “Visions of
you” (Smith &Selway remix), Paul Van Dyk “For an Angel”, to much to mention.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 10 TUNES AT THE MOMENT ?

In no particular order (really!):

1. Bedrock : “Emerald”

2. Sinesweeper : “Eyes Wide Open”

3. Tomaz vs Filterheadz : “Sunshine”

4. TDR : “Lief” (still a working title but the tune rocks!)

5. Archigram : “Carnaval”

6. Whatever Girl : “Activator”

7. Sandy vs Housetrap “Overdrive”

8. Valentino : don’t know the title but Deep Dish played this at Pacha.
Superb!!!

9. Timo Maas feat Kelis : “Help Me”

10. I heard a new Sander Kleinenberg track that was really cool!
