Lately I've become a huge fan of the poet Taylor Mali. His command of the English language is something rare in the poetry scene that for the last decade and a half has been dominated by wannabe MC "slammers".

What's homosexual about that? You think poets can't get any/all women they want? Try going up to a girl and wowing her with your knowledge of math and science...then I'll write her a sonnet...we'll see who leaves alone.
And for my undertone...which isn't really an undertone I guess

Are you saying poets aren't smart? What kind of knowledge do you think a woman will be more impressed with...math or science? or literature, art, music, and other things that inspire passion?
Math and science people are intelligent, artists are intellectual. Women prefer intellectuals every time.
You: Hello there, darling. I can calculate the distance between Mars and the closest supernova in my head. I work for NASA studying pictures of slime on rocks.
Poet: Excuse me miss, I can't help but notice how your smile stands out in this place, like a rose growing in winter. I'm fascinated...I'm a poet. I draw inspiration from beauty and goodness and I really think you could be a part of that if we got to know each other. Let me get you a drink....
Have fun at home playing Xbox while the poet's going home with your girl. |

"things that inspire passion".. lol you're obviously biased.
Speaking for myself, I'd be damn impressed if a guy is interested in sciences like space, physics, math, chemistry (as those are areas I'm studying/ interested in) but if he's interested in literature and music then that's also something that's impressive.
But what makes you think that a woman can't be impressed by both? There can be overlap And there usually is.

I know a rather attractive young woman I went to college with who studied astronomy and now works for NASA. Lots of other similar women I know majored in finance and other fields I assume are not considered as artistic or inspiring as literature or art. So I'm not seeing reality matching the cliché.
That said, I'm a civil engineer (probably the least "nerdy" of all engineering, but whatever; and it's actually very creative) who strongly enjoys deeply captivating art, literature, music, etc. But when I talk to anyone who simply appreciates intelligence, there's no shame for me to express that I hold knowledge beyond pop culture (come on, everyone knows about that.) I get more questions about "What is ciivl engineering?" than I get signals of disinterest (rare if ever.) On another note, I think anyone who tries to make out this dichotomy like there's just chin-rubbingly-deep art and then there's just bland, rigid logic should learn more about both and see that they have strong, nuanced associations with each other. Numbers maybe aren't as colorful as an impressionist painting, and an intricate sculpture probably is more visually stunning than an algebraic expression; but they're not mutually exclusive. Ever seen some of the world's bridges or skyscrapers? How is that possible, just sheer vision, or incredibly precise engineering, or both? I vote both. And a girl who is worth your time would probably find that interesting. |

The pair of you are right, nobody's saying there can't be overlaps. I'm just saying that in my single days I generally had a lot more luck than other people I knew who worked in things like business or science. I worked in music and radio and for some reason women just tended to find that a lot more interesting. Maybe it's cuz we didn't go out to places around MIT, I don't know.
But, I'm settled down now anyway with a wonderful son and a woman I wouldn't give up for anything, so if they're more interested in the coke-bottle glasses kid from the math club now than the melancholy dressed-in-black and in touch with his emotions artist with the motorcycle then it really isn't my concern anymore I guess |
