I recently bought Armin's new Mirage album. As one of few I love it! For me it worked. It's really rich, lot of sounds, cool melodies, everything. But this mastering is driving me mad! Come on! Mirage, main title was squeezed (by guessing) to about 6db of dynamics range. Mirage is by the way track with great tension and so on, but THAT squeezed, it looses everything. Tell me, is that in on-line distribution too? Becouse i can't stand this CD master. I remember that videos Armin gave on YT showing album from inside, YT or videos of song. And it wasn't so painfully compressed.

Come on! Metallica case wasn't enough for the musical world to stop loudness war? And what is? It's like disease across all music. I listen lot of recent HipHop. I can understand loudness war there. Testosteron-ish rule of bigger is better is understendable here, or in Metal, Pop ... but Trance is about emotions. And loudness war destroys it all.... unhappy

Is there any way how to get that beautifull songs in their true sound? (Please don't turn it into discussion if Mirage album is Trance or not. I don't care, I just love it. I just HATE that overdone compression!!!)

If we didn't compress, everything else would be drowned out. Sorry chief. shy

I bought Mirage on iTunes and I didn't notice any bad mastering really. If I were you I'd listen to the previews on iTunes and see if there's a significant difference with your CD.

Echo81: Do you mean that tracks would be drowned out by others? I get it, but that's exactly how loudness war works. If we're gonna compress everything so much, music looses it's qualitty and that's bad. I don't understand it. Is competition in shuffle modes of Ipods more important then qualitty of music? Come on...

Frumbajst: And that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

Compared it with amazon (haven't Itunes player) ... similar.

Well on second listen it's not so bad, but still Imagine master is waaaay better. More dynamics, not so sharp highs, just pleasant. happy I wonder why they had to follow that war even if Imagine was relatively really successful. :-/

The only way would be to break into Armin's home and steal his hard drives or break into Benno's home and steal his hard drives or into the studio of the guy who did the mastering and steal his hard drives.

Other than that, no.

i'm afraid this is the current music climate we live in - master everything as loud as you can to within an inch of it's life!!

i think that things will ease off within the next 5 years or so as people realise that perhaps it's all gone too far and that alot of music would sound better overall if it wasn't mastered so brutally.

until then, you better get used to it my friend - or why don't you do something about it, such as refuse to buy music that's so heavily mastered and send the artist an album telling them this!

if enough people did this, then eventually people would start to insist that their music wasn't so drastically mastered.

it's the power of the people my friend!!

that is why i enjoy underground house more. like systematic sessions podcast, not alot of tracks in each podcast have the heavy compression.

I haven't heard the album, perhaps post a short clip as an example for us?

I'm too afraid to post somewhere sample from album, but your topic inspired me to compare the waveforms.

The upper one is Mirage and the bottom one is Imagine, which I think is kind of similar "tension building" track from his previous ablum. It's just not right. unhappy
