I'm still getting to grips with Reason 4, and just heard 5 is about to be released:

Anyone excited about this? And if you use Reason, what other DAW do you use with it?

I'm not that interested in using the program itself because I'm already an very happy Ableton Live-user, even though I've used Reason for quite some time a couple of years ago. Even though, I find it great to see that the Propellerhead's team still believe in their product!

Yes, STi_NJ has been trying to get me to convert to Live, says it's much less of a headache than Reason.

I like Reason a lot so far though - I probably will upgrade to 5 (cash permitting).

Interesting! I still use Reason. Too old and not so serious to move to Ableton or whatever. I'm glad that they finally decided to update the rex and I can't wait to play with it and all the other new features in 5.0!

Yeah, I'm not sure I completely buy that either. I think one's ability to get creative comes down to themselves and not necessarily the program they're working in.

I'm not knocking Reason at all. It's a brilliant program. I just personally found it to have a steep learning curve. Especially when it came to routing effects etc. That's just me though happy

Well, after switching from Reason to Ableton Live, I found that my creativity sky-rocketed. Could be because of better suited workflow, could be because of more opportunities (handling of audio files and VSTs!), or it could be because of my epiphany that music needs to be visual. It could also be all of them, or something else for all I know.

I use very few synths and effects in Live though, so I'd definitely say there's some truth to your second statement. First statement however, I'm not so sure about wink

hmm..is that so?

I've been considering changing to Ableton for the same reasons you just mentioned. Audio files are just a pain in the ass to engineer on recycle and I'm not a big fan of the effects in reason; pretty dull if you'd ask me. I like the synthesizers themselves, though. I might trying Rewire with Ableton as the master host boobs

Only being able to use and abuse timestretching opened up a lot for me. I'll not hijack a Reason topic too much though, so I'll list the things I miss:

- Stability. Reason never crashed, ever. Not the slightest sign of instability.
- The Scream distortion effect
- The custom buttons on the Combinator. Ableton Live has custom 1-127 knobs, but not on/off buttons like Reason does.
- Reason's synthesizers were already really good back when I used v3, and Thor also looks amazing.
- I really liked ReDrum and Dr. Rex for making beats. Live is ok in this area as well, but Reason does it in a very nice way.

Other than that, I find Reason to be a pain in the arse. Others might find it to be the best for their creativity. As long as you're able to make music, it's all good.
