...a pal of mine just swung by to say hi and as he was leaving he shook my hand and just about broke it. A simple "five" and "knuckle bump" will do it...it's not like he has to impress me or anything, he helps his auntie run the coffee shop down the way and they have really good croissants which is the only reason I go down there...I don't even drink coffee and it's not like proving to me that you're a "man's man" by pushing my knuckles out through the flesh is going make me like espresso all of a sudden.

i know, this mentality of "if you don't have a firm grip, you simply are not a man" bullshit. Do they do that with women? hell no. Pseudo-territorial caveman shit still applies these days.

Agreed. On the other hand people who seem to have no joints in their hands (e.g. the hand just "hanging" as an attachment to the body) while shaking hands really creeps me out.

actually my hands are not that big i dont know why
but when i try to give a firm grip to another man its difficult because their hand is usually twice as big as mine

and it almost covers it up so i cant give a good strong grip

wussies, nothing wrong with a good firm handshake. if you squeeze just as firm, you won't feel a thing.

agreed thumbsup people who hate firm handshakes are either males who have romantic or sexual attraction or behavior toward members of the same sex, or people with a uterus boobs

There's a limit I think. A firm handshake is good - there's nothing worse then a weak handshake.

But on the flipside I think psychologically if you are shaking someone's hand and squeezing too hard it shows you are overcompensating for something (any psychologists here, please correct me if I am wrong!)

For me, the single most important rule when shaking someone's hand or greeting them is to look them in the eye. nerdy

Firm handshake = I'm confident
Weak handshake = I'm nervous / in doubt / afraid
Too firm handshake = I'm a prick / I'm pretending to be somebody I'm not
Not firm, nor weak handshake ("unguided") = indifferent, not impressed, etc. etc.

Body language, people, body language! wink

Exactly...when you respect someone you give them a nice grip and a confident shake [/undertone], but this was just a pal stopping by to say hi and shoot the breeze for a minute...to be honest I don't even like shaking hands at all...in all of my professional career a five/knuckle pump has been sufficient, and if it's anything formal then a five/mild-shake hybrid.

+1, I usually don't 'normally' handshake with others, we use special handshakes that I have with almost everyone I know.

You ever get into the hadshake standoff where you both are firm shake type of dudes and the hand shake lasts about 10-20 seconds along with a stare down?

This happened with my old boss all the time. LOL
