Isn't that just personal? I know guys who can drink 25 beers and who don't get drunk at all and I know people who pass out after 2 beers. I've never done a gig up until know (still a bedroom DJ puh), but since I almost never drink alcohol or do drugs I don't think that 'll change once I hit the decks. I tend to get very sleepy when I drink too much, so I'll better stick with plain old water happy.

I think the answers are pretty much here already.

If you're the sort who can drink 15 litres of vodka and still thread the eye of a needle easily, then DJing should present no problem.

If you're the sort who starts to slur, stagger and loose concentration and control after a few, its clearly a very bad idea.

I tend to have a few beers, usually at the start of the night if I'm on later, then after that don't drink at all, even if it's a few hours until I'm on.

This keeps me in the "slightly relaxed and happy but stil 100% in control and technically able to drive" stage.

When I'm up there I may go through one or two more to keep me "topped up" as it were.

Plus, I'm still at that early stage of my career, in that I haven't DJd to many crowds, so I don't often know what to do with myself when not mixing, so having a quick swig of beer keeps me active.

I recently heard Matt Hardwick play a set and by the looks of things he was completely intoxicated! The crazy thing was though... his mixing was still pretty much immaculate!

in all the trance shows ive been to, ive never really seen a trance dj downing drinks. The electro djs that i have seen like aoki and mstrkrft have the vodka and crown royal going and they drink it like water.
ive always thought that electro is more of party music where you can drink where as maybe trance is more for ambiance and dancing. im using trance as a comparison but my opinion is that drinking depends on the dj and the venue/crowd/atmosphere.

I just came up with this question, and would like to know your opinion:

Lets say you are a dj and you are about to play in a venue. Would you rather stay completely sober throughout the night to be sure everything in under control, or would you drink a little bit (say, 2 beers and 2 of tequila) to spice it up, get more comfortable and more outgoing with the crowd?

I guess a shot or 2 is ok but I personally don't go further. In fact I always carry a water bottle with me to stay fresh throughout the gig.

Paul van dyk had to run to the toilet in Bucharest a couple years back. that was funny. He practically ran out, The music played for 2 minutes with nobody on stage and then he came back mixing perfectly.

You should try doing a residency in Mexico City and watch what happens the first two weeks you're there grin2 You have to run for your life every 3 tracks lol

The dj is just the lucky one spinning the records.

If you can still play the same as when you're sober then drink as much as you like, as long as you don't fall about and make an arse of yourself.

ps. It's about the love of music and mixing, etc etc. If the crowd like what you love doing then that's what makes a good dj. You don't go into the job because you want a job, well, maybe some do, but that's usually not the case, extremely unusual actually. You are not a servant of any kind. grin2
