We'll be looking at this section over the next few weeks to get it updated.

Ideally, reference it to the trance.nu wiki so that (a) everyone can update it easily, and (b) the wiki gets more attention; the wiki definitely deserves more attention, and offers great interactivity in areas such as this one.

I got Reason and an Axiom 25 from a raffle, and thus I need some decent startup tutorials to get me off the ground...I've a bit of experience with analog recording, so I'm sure that's applicable somewhere...Also, I won ProTools LE, but is it usable for trance production (I know how to ReWire Reason into ProTools, for the record)?

Some useable stuff, but from other source(not spamming, just because this can help to others):

Reese tutorial.

Best would be to use a synth like Z3ta+ for it. Use the oscillators with saw waves (you've guessed it) and detune them against each other. I have used all six oscillators to get a really fat sound. You could also set some of these an octave higher or lower. However, you should have a fat, moving sound already. Route these oscillators into the filters - use parallel filtering for that. Choose a notch filter for each and set them to different cut off values (one in the lower ranges, low mid-range, the other one to the higher mid-ranges, high ranges). Apply an LFO to each filter, each one with a different speed. This should give you a moving sound. Apply some distortion/saturation to (before) the filters. Add a phaser/chorus and reverb/delay to taste...

These are the steps I have taken. Takes about five minutes to knock this patch up and maybe another five to ten minutes for some tweaking. I won't upload this preset for it wouldn't make any sense if everyone would have the same preset. A tutorial can't teach you experience - you have to make them for yourself. So I encourage everyone to play with these elements...

This sound is based on two principles. On the one hand it's all about movement in the sound - you can achieve it by detuning the oscillators, by modulating the cut-off frequency (mind, we haven't used strong filters here that cuts off large parts of the frequency spectrum - you don't want to kill that spectrum) and finally by applying a phaser/chorus to it. General rule is to play with the fx in moderation instead of drowning the sound with it. Pouring loads of different spices in your meal will spoil it, too - so you're adding them bit by bit while cooking and stirring...

The other principle is distortion/saturation in combination with the filtering - that's why I have applied some before the filters. Distortion and Saturation add harmonics to the sound which are ironed out again by the filter - another common practice when it comes to this sound (I will focus on that in a second part when you put that sound in a sampler)...

Of course, you can experiment with other elements that add to the movement and the saturation of the sound - other waveforms with rich harmonics, simple wave-shaping, bit-crushing, wave-scanning, fm, filter-fm - using all of these with modulators (LFOs, Envelopes) - basically think of everything in this range what your synth is capable of...

So, that was about 45 minutes of my lunch time for this first part - hope it helps (part two tonight, visit my myspace page for more bass examples in the meantime)...

...the raw sound should sound like this now. At first the raw oscillators, then with the filters switched on, then with the saturation before the filters, then the filter modulation, after that the phaser and finally some compression and eqing - pure Z3ta+ (but Massive, Albino and Absynth are good, too)...

Here are the Threads Of Interest (DOA again).

And very awesome EQ Tutorial that explains everything about EQ that should know every producer.
