say you do a remix of a well known song, like for example u take the melody line from bronski's small town boy and make it into an uplifting trance tune? Will labels be interested in this or other remixes like it?

3. Send a link to a full length, 128kbps or higher version of the track.

Don't they want at least 192kbs? At least many websites they ask you to send 256kbs so 128kbs would seem too low.

It depends. I would never mind 128kbps because you can tell the exact idea behind the demo and whether it works and whether you want it, but it saves a couple of minutes on the download time. If everything was 128kbps instead of 320kbps when it arrived it would make download time a lot quicker.

That was just me though, there are of course some labels which specify they'd like a higher quality file. But generally you can find this out from the label's website on the same page that you can find out their email address for sending demos in the first place.

Only thing you're allowed to do is contact the label that owns the original track and see if they're interested in signing your remix. Go to any other label and you're infringing the rights of the original composer and you risk getting sued. I would not recommend it.

Just going to add a point here to Micra's excellent guide.

Know what label you are sending music to. Ie, if you're going to send off a turkish pop track to a trance label, then you're just wasting the A&R's time. If you want the best result for your music, get it sent to a label that loves that kind of music.

I've found that the best submissions are those with very little info, prefferably a dedicated page with short bio and a direct mp3 links (shows your're serious about your music), don't zip or rar the files. Don't use complicated download services that requires you to wait to be able to download or type in passwords. Don't send ftp details with username/password, give it to us as a link instead.

If you want to get a guaranteed listen, get hitched up with a company such as SA-UK, as part of how they operate is to send out demos to label partners and it means that it's quality that they're sending out.

Also, keep mails short, simple and to the point.
Don't go writing stuff like "I have uploaded a old track of mine and it would be nice if you could give me some feedback on it whatever".

About a freelancer remix of a tune you like, it's not 100% necesary to send it to the label that released the original, you can send it to another label and if they're interested in releasing that particular remix they will contact the original label and get it licensed, so it's going to be a release of the new label in behalf of the old label.

This thing is going on with a bootleg I made recently.

Great topic btw, especially for the people that are sending their first tracks.

I work via MSN, easier for me, not to fond of emailing and all that.

Um...is it really infringement to copy a melody? I wouldnt think so...plenty of songs have melodies very similar and at some points in the the song exactly like another song, and they dont have problems
