Hey...
I'll be taking a trip to cartagena this weekend and I'll be in colombia for 9 days. Anyone here know what is good in cartagena? Clubs? Places to hang out? Things to stay away from?
And what about Medellin? I was thinking about flying over from cartagena. Any recommendations?
Thanks! |

My first worry would be how safe is it to be walking the streets out there? Have you got any local friends to keep you away from trouble at least? |

Cartagena is totally safe in the old city, but if you go into the new city then it's a little sketchy, especially at night. In the old city though, you're fine at all hours, except that if you look like a tourist you'll have jewelry vendors absolutely hounding you every step you take, it's annoying.
If you're looking for a good beach then check out Bocanegra, it's really really nice and at night there's a lot of clubbing to be done in that area from what I understand, but I never went so I can't recommend anything specific.
For historic stuff you can tour the Spanish forts and walk around on the old city walls, some of which still have Spanish cannons on them. If you find any kind of historical lecture tour or something, take it! The history of that city is amazing, from the early Spanish settlers, to the English/Dutch/French invasions, to the days when it was a pirate stronghold, then when it was a major player in the plans of Simon Bolivar. Make sure you visit his plaza there as well, the state of Bolivar is amazing. Also the Naval Museum of the Caribbean is not to be missed, it's fascinating. When you get done with the museum you walk out into a little restaurant area where they have native dancers do the shakey-shakey (not sure the real name haha) and you can get a bite to eat or something cold to drink.
Cartagena is one of my favorite places in the world and recently I've noticed a lot more people going so make sure you go and have a great time and spread the word so that more people can enjoy it. I don't understand why it isn't a more popular vacation spot, but it seems people are finally waking up to it. |

^ Sounds a bit like Panama City where I've actually been
The rainforest-type tropical nature there is something really unmissable |
