Hehe, you're attacking your problem from the wrong angle. Start by figuring out what's causing the heating. Unless you're pulling radial blur on 50 mpixel photos in photoshop constantly, I'd say you have some sort of software hogging your cpu.
Check your activity monitor or try iStat Menus 3 for details. |

Have the same problems with my Acer, which I've heard are known for having shitty computer fans. Mine makes this weird sound from startup which stops after 5-10 minutes. And then the computer goes on a heating rampage. I can never sit with my laptop on my knees and just yesterday, it shut down because of overheating itself for the 15th time.
I should've bought an Asus or something...

buddy listen to this, and try it out before dismissing it.
i had the same problem with my HP, was overheating especially with virus scans, then shuts down by itself, and it only gets worse with time, which drove me nuts. i googled the crap out of this problem and no solution worked except for one that i kept dismissing all the time.
there's dust on the cooling unit (whatever its called). all you gotta do is simply blow into the fan exit strongly a couple of times while its working. and the problem is going to stop.
i'm a happy guy since. |

| I had a lot of problem with my fujitsu siemens amilo. One day it got so overheated that everything got real slowly. If I start it up now it takes half hour to get windows to load. And eventually everything turns off. I think the CPU is damaged. |

I have always disliked Dell. Every time when my friends had a computer problem it was always a dell (desktop though), and since I have some knowledge with computer hardware I had to try to fix it. Young people seem not to save there CD/DVDs for that computer or misstreat them baddle. It was a hell trying to fix a dell without an original disc. |

They are all in Celsius, just for you Kamil.
Hard drive temperature: 42º
CPU temperature: 63º
Airport card temperature: 55º
Enclosure base temperature: 45º
GPU diode temperature: 67º
CPU heatsink temperature: 51º
Heatsink A temperature: 52º
Heatsink B temperature: 44º

My original temperature without using any cooler or upping my internal fan speed would be about 71º-76º Celsius .

Right now it's running, without any coolers at 6,000 RPM's and is fluctuating between 60º-62º, and that is with 85% of my CPU idling.

Those aren't unrealistic temperatures, here is my mac pro desktop just after a cold boot;
Of course, this is a desktop vs. laptop. Laptops can run high heat temps. It could be poor thermal paste or improper application of it from processor to heat sink. Check to see if you have any background applications running that create strain on the processor. If the fan doesnt help much, thats really odd, as it should help a ton.
Is the video card dedicated (geforce 9400m) or is it the onboard one? If its the geforce, i think you may need to send it back, i heard about those overheating and being sent back for a recall, apple had some serious issues with them. |

After about an hours worth of use with only firefox running;
my video can reach temperatures of nearly 100 degrees celsius, its not uncommon. The hardware can take quite a beating before it fries, but its best to have everything running cool, except for the hard drive, that can run normal without cooling, its a complete myth that hard drives need to be cooled. |

@Jezper, Right now I'm only running Chrome and iTunes along with other system processes. My CPU is at 10% used between my processes and the core ones. And about 90% is free. And currently right now my overall temperature is 146º, with a fan speed of 6,000 RPM and my external cooler. I realize that upping fan speed will increase temperature a little bit but should overcome itself with the extra cooling.
@Kamil, I know my temperatures aren't that crazy but when I'm working on a laptop with no chance of adding water cooling or adding any aftermarket cooler, that is a little high. And I do have dedicated graphics card as well, I believe it's a NVIDIA 8600 series?(will check). Remember this is a late 2008 body style, not the newest unibody aluminum one. |

hm. I think it kind of worked. the fan made this little flicker sound and then it started to chill down. have blown 5 times now. will do so again in an hour. but better than before! eureka. thanks! although my question is, do you still blow on the fan from time to time or one quick blowing rampage did the trick? |

it took me like an hour to format/reinstall windows and get all the drivers running. i've got my dell for some 4 years now. if it wasn't for my own stupidity i would have not one single problem with it. a month ago i got a virus that totally crashed windows. nothing on the hardware. can't blame dell for kids loosing their discs right? |
