its far from just compression buddy. I use EQ, multiband compression, stereo imaging, harmonic excitation and maximization. i dont always use all those processes but i use atleast 2 or 3 of them in every project.

Well, since I'm completely clueless on mastering, what is harmonic excitation?

its the addition of 2nd and 3rd order harmonic distortion the the frequency band. Of course, its not the same is distortion where a track is way too loud. It can be, but not always, used instead of boosting with an EQ as the result can more defined and clear.

Nice work. Only I would compress the bass range a little more, and ease up on the ~400 Hz range slightly (a few Hz above, to be exact), as well as bring out the ~3 kHz range, only that would make the part at 1:03 (in the before-and-after clip) a bit too present. Also the treble sounds like it's been excited a bit too much. How are your attack settings on your compressor(s)? It all sounds quite 'transienty', and in a lot of ways I do actually prefer the mixdown.

cheers for the input buddy happy regarding attack settings on the compression. off the top of my head i think they are set to around 10-25ms.

Is that multi-band or single-band? For the lower bands you'll want more of course and shorter times for the higher bands, but 10-25 ms sounds about right on average. I just prefer a slightly more smoothed out sound, but anyway great job on not destroying the dynamics. happy

yeh its multiband buddy, I always thought you could be tighter at the low end as there isnt the same risk of compromising the transients? well you learn something new everyday eh lol. I'll look into tightening up the higher bands in future too. cheers for listening and the advice you have given me buddy happy
