Clearly, the title suggests what this thread is all about.

For all you producers with half finished tracks and even little ideas and you're not sure what to do with them next, which direction to go in or how to get that lead sound you think would suit it (which let's face it, is all of us) - here's a thread to you!

So, just to clarify - this isn't another artist promotion thread, it's a thread where (hopefully) others can throw around some ideas for you if you're stuck on a track and don't know what to do with it.

Here's something i just had a crack at tonight, but have no idea what to do with it next, or what it should sound like...

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ngohlb

Ideas?

feel free to post your own stuff too, but also comment on others.

Quality work Macker. This would sound excellent in a video game like Final Fantasy X or something. (thats a complement) thumbsup

However around :23-:25 theres a note that just sounds out of place though

I especially dig the part around :33.

Just my two cents

thanks man! out of place in terms of pitch, or time?

What direction should I take this? i've no idea what to do next...add more strings and turn it into a little orchestral piece, or add a bassline and percussion (obviously not trance style)?

An old melody a friend of mine made up a couple of years ago, that I've thought of working into a 2007-remix.

http://nordlanderproduktion.se/~oscar/Musik/Genius.mp3

Trying to figure out an interesting buildup, but haven't had the time/inspiration/motivation due to a lot of stuff going on at school, so it's just the potential chorus atm.

Macker:
Sounds very interesting, have been thinking of working with more classical stuff too to get a broader repertoire.

Like the sound of that! plenty of energy in it. I think it could do with a kinda counter melody in the background somewhere maybe? doesn't have to be anything really complex. I'm tired! i'm goin to bed lol

Yeah, an arp of some sort would perhaps make it a bit more interesting, or maybe a gritty lead like the ones in Johan Gielen's older tunes. Will work on it when I get some more time.

Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite. happy

Macker: Perhaps some light breaks lush fat pads to go with it. The strings sound a little too intens to my ears.

D2: Some shiwshes, swoshes and pieowwws would be cool. Seriously.

Here's something I've been working on the past week. Working with 3/4 instead of 4/4 is kinda cool happy

I would appreciate some ideas on other things to include in the song and stuff. The structure is only a rough sketch.

Thanks in advance for your honesty and time happy

I've been working on this song for a little while: 404 and it's almost done, but it just need some real work on it, especially in the bass, which I'm bad at.

Also I have another song I kind of started, but then I just couldn't do anything with it after the minute mark. Wavefield (The Name For Now)

Any feedback would help. I'm kinda having a day where I'm just going nowhere.

Love the sound of that! The thing is, with a track like that, you can more/less take it in any direction you like...perhaps a break where everything goes quiet and then build it up by filtering in a really phat bassline, and then bring it all back in or something?

404 took too long to load for me, and i have to go to work...so i'll comment on the other;

Well, I hate electro but i'll be contructive. The melody could definately work, but after getting through the whole sample, i was a little let down by the fact that there's no bass. I don't like electro as it is, but without a bassline, i can't even imagine people that DO like it would enjoy it. It's just one of those genres that REALLY needs the bassline to carry it along more so than the melody imo. You gotta get a funky bassline in there!

Unfinished 1 - sounds ok, but the bassline is where the problem is I think. I can hear it, but I can't feel it! Bass on dance tracks should punch you in the chest, and this one doesn't. Maybe it's due to EQ or simply that the synth can't produce the low notes, i don't know? Whatever it is, it needs sorting out.

Unfinished 2 - Now, again the same problem, so little bass, it just needs turning up is all. The melody has potential but I think it needs "something" else, that elusive "wow factor" that makes it stick in peoples heads. Possibly a slight change in the melody, or a different lead sound?

also, c'mon guys, the whole idea was that you post something of your own AND comment on someone elses.

Yeah, i hope it doesn't get used for spam - and I also hope it's a thread that stays alive. I'm forever making great sounding little clips that go nowhere lol.

Man, you gotta finish that track, there were some really interesting sounds in it!

Interesting with the 3/4 beat, and some cool instruments/sounds. Maybe some pads or a synth @ 2:11 where you introduce a melody that adds some harmonic feeling to the tune?

Just an idea, though it sounds cool as it is already. happy

Thanks. I think that could work quite well happy

And regarding this thread: it could be a rule that you have to comment on the track last posted if you're posting a track yourself. That way, everyone gets feedback. You could of course comment more than that one track though.
